What "eco-friendly" actually means — the four claims

The label gets used loosely. The real distinctions:

• Compostable — breaks down to nutrient-rich compost in industrial composting conditions, certified to EN13432. Bagasse, PLA and FSC kraft with bio-linings qualify.
• Biodegradable — breaks down naturally over time, but without a defined timeframe or end-state. Weaker claim than compostable.
• Recyclable — can be processed back into the same or similar material. Aluminium foil, paperboard, and PE-lined paper cups (specialist recycling) qualify.
• Plastic-free — contains no plastic at any stage. Bagasse, kraft, wood and bamboo qualify.
