What "eco-friendly" actually means in food packaging

The label gets used loosely. Worth knowing the real difference between the four common claims:

Compostable — breaks down to nutrient-rich compost in industrial composting conditions, certified to EN13432. Bagasse, PLA and kraft with bio-linings qualify.
Biodegradable — breaks down naturally over time, but without a defined timeframe or end-state. A weaker claim than compostable.
Recyclable — can be processed back into the same or similar material. Aluminium foil, paperboard and standard PE-lined cups (with specialist recycling) qualify.
Plastic-free — contains no plastic at any stage. Bagasse, kraft, wood and bamboo all qualify.

The eco-friendly products we stock are explicit about which of these claims they meet. Bagasse clamshells are compostable AND plastic-free. PLA-lined cups are compostable but contain plant-based PLA (technically a plastic, technically compostable). Aluminium foil is recyclable but not compostable.
